Is your SWD well inside a Seismic Response Area?
Data as of 2026-04-18.
The pain
Three active SRAs carry specific injection-pressure and volume caps
The Texas Railroad Commission issues Seismic Response Areas — geographic zones where elevated induced-seismicity risk triggers specific injection restrictions on nearby disposal wells. Three are active as of 2026: Gardendale, Stanton, and Northern Culberson-Reeves. Each SRA carries a controlling TRC order with the precise restrictions.
For permit work, the question is rarely subtle: either a well sits inside an SRA or it doesn't. But the operational effect is large. SRAs can cap daily injection volumes, require pressure-test frequencies, and trigger monitoring obligations that don't apply to wells a mile outside the boundary.
How PermianIQ helps
- Every well on the PermianIQ map carries an SRA flag and the controlling order reference
- SRA boundaries rendered as map overlays with the order text linked
- Cross-referenced with TexNet seismic events for 12-month context
- Used for permit narrative, lease evaluation, and post-injection monitoring planning
Frequently asked
- How many SRAs are active in Texas right now?
- Three as of 2026-04-18: Gardendale, Stanton, and Northern Culberson-Reeves. The TRC updates the list as seismic conditions warrant; verify directly before relying on it for a filing.
- What restrictions apply inside an SRA?
- It varies by SRA. Common elements: daily injection volume caps, maximum surface pressure limits, monitoring and reporting cadence, and in some cases shut-in triggers tied to specific seismic events. The controlling TRC order for each SRA spells out the exact limits.
- Does being adjacent to an SRA affect my well?
- Formally, only wells inside the SRA polygon are subject to the SRA order. In practice, proximity increases TRC scrutiny — especially within a few miles — and should be addressed in permit narratives even if the well is technically outside.
- Where does PermianIQ get SRA boundaries?
- Public TRC-published shapefiles. We update when the commission publishes changes. 'Data as of' date is shown on every view.
