Permian SWD capacity is tightening. Here's how to read the public data.

The pain
Reported daily injection volumes vs permitted max-rate tell you capacity
Every TRC-permitted SWD well has a permitted maximum daily injection rate, reported in barrels per day. Operators also file monthly H-10 reports with actual injection volumes, from which daily averages can be derived. The ratio of actual daily volume to permitted max is the most honest public proxy for how much headroom a well has left.
A well at 40% utilization has meaningful room. A well at 90% is effectively full and cannot absorb more water without a rate increase, which requires a new TRC filing and (under the 2-mile AOR rule) a larger permit package.
How PermianIQ helps
- PermianIQ computes estimated capacity utilization for every active Texas SWD well
- Filter by county, operator, or lease area to see who has room and who is full
- Compare to adjacent SRA boundaries — a well inside an SRA may be capacity-capped by order, not by rate
- Exportable for lease negotiation, midstream planning, or M&A screening
Frequently asked
- What counts as 'high' capacity utilization?
- There's no bright line, but as rule of thumb: under 50% is clear headroom, 50–80% is moderate, over 80% means the well is effectively full and further injection requires either pressure management or a formal rate increase.
- Is capacity utilization the same as permit utilization?
- No. Capacity is about physical/injection-rate headroom. Permit utilization can also be restricted by TRC orders (SRA caps, pressure limits, volume limits by formation). PermianIQ surfaces both where available.
- How recent is the injection volume data?
- TRC H-10 filings lag 30–90 days. PermianIQ refreshes injection data when new filings post. We label the 'Data as of' date on every result.
- Can estimated capacity be wrong?
- Yes. Permitted max rates can be outdated or reflect seasonal operating constraints. Treat the estimate as a screen, not a verdict. Verify directly with the operator or TRC file before operational decisions.
