What is a Seismic Response Area?

A Seismic Response Area (SRA) is a geographic zone designated by the Texas Railroad Commission where injection rates at saltwater disposal wells are reduced or monitored more closely due to induced seismicity concerns. Wells inside an SRA may face volume restrictions, enhanced reporting requirements, and additional permitting conditions.

The Northern Culberson-Reeves Seismic Response Area covers northern Culberson and Reeves counties in the Delaware Basin. Established in October 2021 and expanded in December 2022, this is the largest SRA in the Permian Basin. A magnitude 5.4 earthquake in May 2025 — the strongest induced seismic event in Texas history — triggered a suspension of all deep disposal permits in this zone.

PermianIQ tracks 167 SWD wells inside the Northern Culberson-Reeves SRA, operated by 53 companies. Estimated average capacity utilization is 25%. 3,235 seismic events have been recorded within the SRA boundary in the past 12 months, with a maximum magnitude of 5.4.
